Installing and Ordering Channel panel (as seen on ABC Inventors)

A standard size channel panel (410 mm wide x 250 mm high x 14mm thick) is now available. The panel is designed to redirect sunlight onto the ceiling.   

What window does it work best on?

Channel panel works best on North facing windows but also works well on East and West facing windows.

Ensuring that the panel gets sunlight:

If the Channel Panel is placed too high in the window, it will not capture the optimum amount of sunlight to redirect, by lowering the Channel Panel marginally, it will increase significantly the sunlight being redirected into the room, but keep it above head height.

The channel panel should be supported inside the window above the head height of an occupant standing in the room otherwise direct sunlight may be redirected into the occupants view:

Installing the Channel Panel

Channel Panel can be installed to compliment your current window dressing.  Channel Panel works best with Venetian blinds.

Ideally, sunlight that is not redirected should be blocked or shaded with an external shade, Venetian or roller blind.

As the diagrams indicate, the Channel Panel must be installed in direct sunlight from the window.  Channel Panel should not be shaded by your current external shade or roller blind.

How to support a panel:

The panel comes supplied with two hooks, two support chains, two Venetian hooks,  two glass hooks and two screw hooks which may be used as follows:

(1) The panel has two support hooks or rings in place

(2) Thread the Venetian hooks over the top box of the Venetian blind:

(3) Use the chains to hang the panel from the Venetian hooks at a suitable height. Ensure that the small red square marker faces inwards – (the 8 mm (wider) panel of the composite panel faces towards the interior).

(4) Set the Venetian blind angle so that the blind blocks direct sunlight but passes the redirected sunlight from the panel.

(5) You now have a well shaded and well lit room.

Temporary Installation

 You can apply the silicone rubber glass hooks to the window and hang the channel panel directly from these hooks. 

Not recommended for long term installation as  the rubber glass hooks may eventually detach.

Performance:

The panel supplied is relatively small (410 mm x 250 mm). The effective redirecting part, the part with the laser cuts, has an area of just 0.075 square metres.

However, sunlight in Australia is so powerful that when sunlight is on the window each panel will input about 4000 lumens of natural light. This is roughly equivalent to the light produced by one and a half 36 W fluorescent tubes. It is sufficient to produce 70 lux in a 4 x 3 x 2.4 m room.

Two panels will input natural light equivalent to the light from three 36 W fluorescent tubes and so on.

Further – none of this light will be wasted on the floor or furnishings – it will all be directed up onto the ceiling and, if the ceiling is white, most of this will be reflected down as a diffuse interior illumination.

Cleaning:

The panel should never need to be cleaned. However, if necessary, clean with a soft cloth, very slightly dampened with water or mineral turpentine.

 Cost

The cost per Channel Panel pack is $52.25.

Postage and handling fee of $21.25 is applicable for deliveries anywhere in Australia up to an order quantity of 4 Channel Panels.

As installation is not performed by Solartran Pty Ltd,  Solartran Pty Ltd shall not be liable for any injuries, claims or damages or any loss or costs arising in any manner from the installation of Channel Panel and its subsequent use.

If you are not satisfied with the Channel Panel that you have purchased, you may return the item within 30 days of delivery for a full refund of the purchase price, (less freight charges). The item must be returned in ‘like new’ condition, with all paperwork, packaging, parts, and accessories to ensure full credit.
